Fanfiction: Do you love it or hate it, or are you totally indifferent? Why?
I waver between indifference and hatred.
The idea of fanfiction is totally fine. It is interesting to see what other people think characters can do and be and situations they can get in. Adventures, new characters, etc. can be really interesting and creative.
BUT fanfiction as it currently exists seems to serve little function other than written pornography. Hey, I like sexy things as much as the next person, but there's so much more to interactions and relationships than just sexy times. Also, the "romantic" situations are often so ridiculous and over-the-top that they're laughable. Yes, I realize it's fiction. But I just can't take it seriously.
And I am not being close minded when I say this... but not every two male characters have hidden gay passions for one another. It's so unoriginal. It's like 90% of fanfic out there. And I'm not even going to go into the weirdo bestiality/furry strangeness that's out there. Bleah.
Obviously, I'm basing this on the limited things I have read and the general culture that I see surrounding fanfic. I am sure there is good stuff out there with great plots, fascinating character back stories and genuinely good writing. But there's way too much schlock out there for me to take it seriously or to have any desire to read any.
The only time I ever had a desire to write any kind of fanfic was to write the story behind Garland Greene, a fictional serial killer played by Steve Buscemi from the movie Con Air. No sexy times there, just lots of twisted brutality. But I haven't, nor do I have any idea what my plot would be. And that's why I don't write it. Because people who can't write should not pretend that they can.
So now that I've probably offended a bunch of people on my friends' list, I'll just say that I still like you guys that write it/like it. Just don't ask me to read it.
